Once again, thanks for the wonderful times. It was lovely to have met so many great people and that we got to pull off so many fun events together. Summary

The film “Hästmannen” (Nov. 2006 - Swe) is a documentary by Peter Gerdehad and Tell Johansson. It’s about a farmer whose refusal to accept modern technology in favor of doing things traditionally has become both an inspiration and a sensation in Sweden. It is a rare honest showcase of both the determination and will of man. It captures a spirit few films can achieve and has received rave reviews both in and out of Sweden. And there is something so distinctly Swedish in Hästmannen’s way of life that it is truly inspirational to many who see it. It really is an incredible movie (ask around).

• She has a recent single out performing a duet with Bernard Butler of Suede called “It’s Just Love”
• On her latest album, which she put out on her own label, she collaborated with Tobias Fröberg, whose worked with several great musicians, including a favorite - Jose Gonzalez.
• She’s done everything herself - not just the songwriting, playing, and singing - but runs her own records label, does her own promotions, and consistently puts out incredibly beautiful music.

Sofia’s Bio

Sofia Talvik was born on an island just off the west coast of Sweden. At the tender age of eighteen she left behind the comfort of home for the bright lights and lonely nights of Stockholm where every experience, good and bad, would soon take the form of a beautiful, funny or heartbreaking story destined to capture the hearts and minds of all who would hear the words when set to Sofia’s gentle, melodic acoustic guitar and minimalist back up of cellos, double bass and soft percussion.

After releasing a low key but critically acclaimed EP, Sofia set to work fine tuning twelve of her songs for the recording of the debut album Blue Moon. As a writer, artist and producer she oversaw every step of the process and the result is an album where the lyrics take centre stage and the melodies provide the essence. With her third album, ‘Jonestown’, Sofia Talvik has further evolved her sound, joining forces with respected artist and producer Tobias Fröberg, who has toured with José Gonzales and produced the artist Peter Morén from “Peter, Bjorn and John”.

We will bring the Kubb Sets, you’ll need to bring anything else. Food and drink would be recommended. Talk to people who celebrated midsommar there a few years back for suggestions.

Getting There

Driving Directions

Take Lake Shore Drive to the Recreation Drive exit, which is between the Belmont and Irving Park exits. (DO NOT EXIT AT BELMONT AVE., YOU WILL BE AT THE WRONG END OF THE HARBOR) After you exit at Recreation Drive, turn right at the stop sign and head south for about a quarter mile. You will see the harbor on the right hand side. Pass through the tree line and walk toward the lake.

Where to Park

Parking is available along Recreation Drive and directly across from G dock of Belmont Harbor (which is the closest to the event). NOTE: Due to the Chicago Park Districts new policies, parking is now $5.00 on Saturdays and Sundays.

We just got this website up and running in time for the Annual Scandinavian Champagne Brunch. It’s still missing content, and I’m sure there are mistakes, etc., but we aimed to keep it light, clean and simple, so hopefully there won’t be too many. It’s a work in progress, so bear with us. But hopefully in the near future we’ll have updates not only for things we’re doing, but also Scandinavian cultural events going on in Chicago that we’d like to share with everyone.

For now, we have the brunch coming up on May 31, 2008. Do check out the event page and sign up if you’re interested. It always promises to be a great time. We also have a Kubb Tournament coming up on June 7, 2008 (the following weekend). We’ve never done this before but expect it to be lots of fun, plus it’s the day after the Swedish National Day so it’ll be a festive way to celebrate. More info on that event up soon!

Our group’s been around awhile, but we’ve evolved over time and are currently seeking new people. If you have any interest, drop us an email at lagom@chicagoswedes.org and let us know!

This is our fifth year doing the Scandinavian Champagne Brunch, and each one has a been a great time hands down. Last year, Skandos and non-Skandos alike enjoyed the great company and atmosphere at Soprano’s, so we’re bringing it back there again. And the weather was so gorgeous, afterwards we brought a good size-group to the outdoor beer garden across the street to keep the party going. This year, Kirkwood Tavern is still there, I’m assuming, but we’ll leave any formal planning up to you guys. And there is a noon Cubs game, so you can always try to plan for that.

The cost for this year’s brunch is $32.50 a person (it’s PayPal, so you’re allowed change!). This includes the brunch buffet and unlimited Champagne, Mimosas, Bloody Mary’s, as well as Sodas, Juice, Coffee and Tea. Please follow the link to PayPal above to reserve a seat. Seating will be limited to approximately 100 people.

Payments will only be accepted through PayPal. All payments must be made by Tuesday, May 27, 2008.

If you’ve made a reservation, please leave a response below with how many people you’re bringing - a la eVite. It may work, it may not, but it should be fun to try. We’ll still need to “approve” them for the time being, so they might not show up until later in the day. We will also be updating the total number of attendees on this page (based on PayPal payments), but this could keep things interesting…

And for those of you who don’t know, here’s a bit of history…

Five years ago a group of girls involved in the Swedish American Museum Junior Board all realized they shared a love for the same two things - Mimosas and Brunch! Through careful planning and diligence, their baby was born - “The Great Scandinavian Brunch Merger” - and welcomed with great success. It was a merger back then, since they brought with them two other Scandinavian organizations in Chicago, SkandoChicago and YPC, to host the event. It was both a great way to bring in Spring, and a springboard for new ideas shared amongst the different groups.

Since then, some people involved have moved, gotten married, had babies, and moved on to great adventures. Others of us, though, are still here doing our part to keep the Scandinavian flags shining brightly here in Chicago. So although SkandoChicago is dormant for the time being, we at Lagom Events are hoping to keep carrying some of their traditions, while continuing on with some of our own. And YPC is always keeping those new interns busy with pub nights, network evenings, and golf outings. So bring your shining faces and if you have an idea to share, now’s as good a time as any!
